Adoption Placements of Children in the Permanent Care of Children’s Services
Special needs children in the permanent care of Children’s Services are adopted by approved families when their caseworkers determine that adoption is in the child’s best interest. Children available for adoption range from healthy newborns to those with special needs. Special needs include sibling groups, older children and children with medical, physical, developmental, learning and emotional problems.
Private Agency Adoptions
Adoptions may be facilitated by any of the non-government, non-profit agencies that have been granted the authority to arrange private adoptions in Alberta. Birth parents may choose to place their child for adoption through a licensed adoption agency. These children do not have any legal status with the Ministry.
Spousal Adoptions
Adoptions of children by the spouse of the child’s biological parent are processed through the use of a self help kit available through the Queen’s Printer. Families may use the services of a lawyer or a private licensed adoption agency to assist them with completion of the adoption petition and filing it with the Court of Queen’s Bench.
Relative Adoptions
Adoptions of children by extended family members are processed through the use of a self help kit available through the Queen’s Printer. Families may use the services of a lawyer or a private licensed adoption agency to assist them with completion of the adoption petition and filing it with the Court of Queen’s Bench.
Private Direct Placement Adoptions
Adoptions of children placed by family members with adoptive families known to them and arranged between the two parties are processed through the use of a self help kit available through the Queen’s Printer. Families may use the services of a lawyer or a private licensed adoption agency to assist them with completion of the adoption petition and filing it with the Court of Queen’s Bench.
International Adoptions
Adoptions of children from other countries are completed with the involvement of private licensed adoption agencies, adoption coordinators, and the involvement of Children’s Services.
