Community Capacity Development and Community Engagement

Because much of the work in which Alberta Children and Youth Services is involved requires significant community support for success, community capacity is a key concept in our work.  A common understanding of the concept and identification of the ways to achieve it are critical.

The Community Capacity Development Framework provides a perspective on the Ministry's community capacity development that will assist CFSAs in carrying out their community capacity development responsibility and related community engagement strategies.

Community Engagement

The CFSAs have an obligation to involve clients and other stakeholders in their planning and other processes.  A goal of Children and Youth Services is that communities have the capacity to plan and deliver services that promote the well-being of children, youth and families. What is new is an emphasis on the following objectives.

  • Using community engagement as a means to enhance community capacity for shared planning and delivery of services
  • Development of community engagement strategies to ensure a more comprehensive approach to responding to needs of children and families
  • A desire to share information on successes and best practices for community engagement

With this emphasis is a need to develop a common understanding of community engagement.  The intent of the Community Engagement Guide is to provide parameters that create a common lens through which community engagement initiatives can be viewed.

Community Engagement Initiatives

Board Resources and Development has compiled the community engagement initiatives that were submitted and used as input for the Community Engagement Guide. These are provided here, for your reference, in two Excel spreadsheets -- one for 2005-06 and the other for 2006-07.
