The Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act

The Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act is the legal authority for providing child intervention services in Alberta. It requires the provision of services which can be expected to correct or relieve the problem that caused a child to be in need of protective services.

The principles of the Enhancement Act guide caseworkers in their work with families. The Enhancement Act stresses the importance of family. It provides for support services to families to ensure that a child will only be removed from home if other, less intrusive measures are not sufficient to protect the child.

The Enhancement Act specifies the circumstances under which a child may be in need of intervention through Alberta Children's Services.

The Enhancement Act reflects an appreciation of the strong contributions foster parents make to children in care.

The Enhancement Act established the role of the Child and Youth Advocate. The Advocate attempts to ensure the views and interests of children are heard and represented.
