Dick Sobsey is the Director of the JP Das Developmental Disabilities Centre, at the University of Alberta, where he also serves as a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and in the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. He is the author of more than 200 books, chapters, and articles related to human services and people with disabilities.

Professor Sobsey's research is primarily focused on the complex relationships between violence and disabilities and on successful adaptation of families of children with severe disabilities. He has worked closely with a wide range of local, national, and international organizations, on efforts to prevent violence and ensure human rights for people with disabilities. These organizations include the Non-Governmental Organizations Advisory Panel to the United Nations Study of Violence Against Children, the Arc of the United States, the Canadian Association for Community Living, and Rehabilitation International.
