Dr. Concha-Eastman is the Regional Advisor for Violence and Injury Prevention in the Pan American Health Organization, Washington, DC, USA. His duties involve cooperation with Member States in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national and/or municipal plans, programs or projects to reduce intentional and unintentional injuries and their consequences. Particular emphasis is placed on underprivileged countries.
Strategies currently being employed to meet these objectives include: advocacy, establishing good and timely information systems, promoting research, encouraging public discussion to put prevention of injuries on the public agenda, collaboration with other UN agencies that work with the same aim, looking for partners both at governmental and non-governmental levels. Internally we look for inter programmatic collaboration to enhance our common goals.
Dr. Concha-Eastman Doctor in Medicine and Surgery at the University del Valle, Cali, Colombia, 1970. He has a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, 1988. Harvard University. He was a visiting Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, Fall 1997.
He is the former Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health and Co-founder and former Director of the Center for Research on Violence and Health, at the University of Valle, Cali. He was Director of the DESEPAZ Program, aimed to reduce violence in Cali region (July 1993 to December 31, 1994).
