Safe Communities Secretariat
The Safe Communities Secretariat was established in April 2008 to oversee and coordinate the implementation of recommendations outlined in the Crime Reduction and Safe Communities Task Force report, Keeping Communities Safe. The Secretariat is made up of nine partnering ministries, and will be committed to developing a comprehensive, long-term crime reduction and prevention strategy, as well as promoting shared responsibility and innovative safe community strategies.
Alberta Children and Youth Services is working towards making Alberta communities safer by taking action to prevent family violence and improve access to existing programs for those affected, expanding mentoring opportunities to provide youth with positive role models and increasing supports for parents of at-risk children.
In early November 2008, the government announced a $60 million fund to strengthen and develop community-based projects and community-police partnership projects The Safe Communities Innovation Fund will be used for innovative projects that prevent or reduce crime at a grass-roots level.
